San Antonio work trip

In May, I went to San Antonio for my only work trip (out of town, overnight) of the year- to the Association of State Floodplain Managers conference.  San Antonio was a pretty nice little city!  Lots to see and do, and pretty awesome food.  The conference was good too- I came back with lots of ideas, and of course, did a lot of networking.

You can't take a trip to San Antonio and not see the Alamo!  It is, as everyone says, much smaller than it looks.  I didn't actually go in, for lack of time and I think it was kind of pricey.

One day, during a part of the day that didn't have any interesting sessions, I took off and took the riverboat boat ride around San Antonio.  I mean, I wouldn't be a good floodplain manager if I didn't do this.  Because as you can see above... everything is built RIGHT on the river.  Now, some of the river is actually man made. Above, you can see an outdoor theater in the La Villita area of San Antonio.  This is along the man made portion of the river.  The theater is on one side of the river, and the seating is on the other.  They filmed a scene from the Sandra Bullock movie, "Miss Congeniality" here in this theater.

The entire river is very pretty.  But I can't help but think of what happens when they get like, an inch or two of rain here!  I mean, the river is just pretty naturally high.  But this is just one giant flood control project, so it doesn't seem that they've had a problem (in a while anyway).  There's lots of shops, restaurants and hotels along the riverwalk.  I guess there's some crime too, but overall, it's pretty nice.

The above picture is of the flood wall that separates the man made portion of the river from the natural side of the river (you can see, this is a T shaped area).

But it was just really pretty and kind of peaceful down in the riverwalk area, which is one or two stories below street level.  You almost forget you're in a city!  If you're ever in San Antonio, you have to check out a restaurant south of town (but within walking distance of the Alamo, although it's kind of a long walk) called Feast.  Best meal I've ever had in my life.  American style tapas- they change their menu from time to time, and the food is outstanding!

May CrossFit Internal Throwdown

This kind of stuff is normally reserved for my other blog, the Bailey Fitness Blog (which, on an unrelated note, is the most boring blog name of all time, and I give all of the credit to my darling husband who came up with that name when we BOTH were keeping the blog... now that's just me on there, I feel the need to spice it up a bit!)

Anyway, but this event was just way too much fun and there were way too many awesome pictures of me in all of my badass CrossFit glory!

So, these were the workouts (we had 3):
 “ The 3 Amigos”
Row 3K
Switch every 250 meters + 5 Burpees

1 Rep Max Clean and Jerk
Your team has 6 minutes for each member to establish a 1 Rep Max Clean and Jerk

La Fiesta
9 x 150 meter, medball runs – each member has to run 3 times
then…
3 Rounds of Pull Ups – Chest to bar, kipping, jumping
20-15-10 reps
Then,
3 Rounds of Push Ups – Chest slap, regular, knee
20-15-10 reps
Then,
3 Rounds of Box Jumps – 30, 24, 20″
20-15-10

** Each team decides how many reps each athlete will do (example: C2B can do the 10 reps, jumping can do 15 and kipping can do 20)

This crazy activity above was some pre-workout hand slapping going on between me and my teammate Scott A.  You can see our super tall (6'8") teammate Rich P. behind us.

Above, I'm working on a 75 or 80# clean here- which I just finished and now I'm about to start the jerk portion of the lift.  We totalled 400# on this WOD and came in 10th out of about 43 teams!

The next workout involved rowing and burpees.  Thankfully the burpees weren't too tough, but I'm a terrible rower.  Thankfully both my teammates made up for my terrible rowing and we came in 5th place!!  Both of these guys are tall and have long arms, so rowing is much easier for people like that!

This is my favorite picture of me above.  This was during the "running with a 14# med ball" portion of the third WOD.  This was our worst showing, but by this point, I think we were all pretty tired.  We came in middle of the pack (20th or so).  If you think I'm bad at rowing, you should see me running with a 14# med ball!  If you think that is a look of pain on my face in the above picture... well, you would be right!

Me and my teammates pausing for a mid-WOD photo shot!  This was really so much fun- it was comfortable being at our home gym with ONLY CFNE athletes there.  I hope Ben decides to do this again, because it was really fun!
