Kare Bear and Josh's wedding!

Kare Bear got married!!! Kare Bear got married!  Such a fun time down in Savannah- not a fun trip getting down there, but it was just so good to see my Auburn girlies again.

Todd and I got on the Boston-Atlanta flight just fine (using my mom's Delta buddy passes- when will we learn!?)  We got to Atlanta, and went to the Savannah gate, and who do we see?  Ayala!  Sweet!  A bestie on my flight? I'll take it!  Of course... I get on the flight, and Todd doesn't.  Uh oh!

Oh but have no fear!  Claudia to the rescue!  Claudia just so happens to be driving through Atlanta on her way down to Savannah at that very moment!  But the looming questions is... will our bags be in Savannah?  Because that's what Delta in Atlanta is telling us.  Yeah right... but okay, let's just get out of Atlanta and get down to Savannah!

We get a phone call on the way down to Savannah.  It's Ayala and she says, "Hey guess what?  We got your bags!"  Seriously?  Okay, let's party!

The rehearsal dinner was Friday night.  Had a blast, and went to a piano bar afterward.  Good times.  At the actual rehearsal dinner, there was a firework display, and everyone patted Josh on the back and told him well done for setting up the fireworks.

Todd and I walked around on Saturday, had a big breakfast at the Cobblestone Cafe, and I seriously considered getting on this boat and taking it for a spin.

Kare Bear looked classic and stunning, as we knew she would, at her wedding on Saturday evening.  It was at this really cool place that looked almost like an old barn.  Very cool.  Here she is, above, dancing with her new husband Josh.  I can't figure out why I didn't get any front shots of the two of them.  Darn open bar...

There was a photo booth, which is by far, the coolest wedding reception fun I have ever had.  Claudia, Ayala and I snapped a few shots of us dressed up in the silly props.

And of course, here we all are- Missy, Stacki, Kelly, Kim, me, and Ayala with our Kare Bear!  If you're wondering about the gang symbols... let's just say, it's a Zeta thing!

San Antonio work trip

In May, I went to San Antonio for my only work trip (out of town, overnight) of the year- to the Association of State Floodplain Managers conference.  San Antonio was a pretty nice little city!  Lots to see and do, and pretty awesome food.  The conference was good too- I came back with lots of ideas, and of course, did a lot of networking.

You can't take a trip to San Antonio and not see the Alamo!  It is, as everyone says, much smaller than it looks.  I didn't actually go in, for lack of time and I think it was kind of pricey.

One day, during a part of the day that didn't have any interesting sessions, I took off and took the riverboat boat ride around San Antonio.  I mean, I wouldn't be a good floodplain manager if I didn't do this.  Because as you can see above... everything is built RIGHT on the river.  Now, some of the river is actually man made. Above, you can see an outdoor theater in the La Villita area of San Antonio.  This is along the man made portion of the river.  The theater is on one side of the river, and the seating is on the other.  They filmed a scene from the Sandra Bullock movie, "Miss Congeniality" here in this theater.

The entire river is very pretty.  But I can't help but think of what happens when they get like, an inch or two of rain here!  I mean, the river is just pretty naturally high.  But this is just one giant flood control project, so it doesn't seem that they've had a problem (in a while anyway).  There's lots of shops, restaurants and hotels along the riverwalk.  I guess there's some crime too, but overall, it's pretty nice.

The above picture is of the flood wall that separates the man made portion of the river from the natural side of the river (you can see, this is a T shaped area).

But it was just really pretty and kind of peaceful down in the riverwalk area, which is one or two stories below street level.  You almost forget you're in a city!  If you're ever in San Antonio, you have to check out a restaurant south of town (but within walking distance of the Alamo, although it's kind of a long walk) called Feast.  Best meal I've ever had in my life.  American style tapas- they change their menu from time to time, and the food is outstanding!

May CrossFit Internal Throwdown

This kind of stuff is normally reserved for my other blog, the Bailey Fitness Blog (which, on an unrelated note, is the most boring blog name of all time, and I give all of the credit to my darling husband who came up with that name when we BOTH were keeping the blog... now that's just me on there, I feel the need to spice it up a bit!)

Anyway, but this event was just way too much fun and there were way too many awesome pictures of me in all of my badass CrossFit glory!

So, these were the workouts (we had 3):
 “ The 3 Amigos”
Row 3K
Switch every 250 meters + 5 Burpees

1 Rep Max Clean and Jerk
Your team has 6 minutes for each member to establish a 1 Rep Max Clean and Jerk

La Fiesta
9 x 150 meter, medball runs – each member has to run 3 times
then…
3 Rounds of Pull Ups – Chest to bar, kipping, jumping
20-15-10 reps
Then,
3 Rounds of Push Ups – Chest slap, regular, knee
20-15-10 reps
Then,
3 Rounds of Box Jumps – 30, 24, 20″
20-15-10

** Each team decides how many reps each athlete will do (example: C2B can do the 10 reps, jumping can do 15 and kipping can do 20)

This crazy activity above was some pre-workout hand slapping going on between me and my teammate Scott A.  You can see our super tall (6'8") teammate Rich P. behind us.

Above, I'm working on a 75 or 80# clean here- which I just finished and now I'm about to start the jerk portion of the lift.  We totalled 400# on this WOD and came in 10th out of about 43 teams!

The next workout involved rowing and burpees.  Thankfully the burpees weren't too tough, but I'm a terrible rower.  Thankfully both my teammates made up for my terrible rowing and we came in 5th place!!  Both of these guys are tall and have long arms, so rowing is much easier for people like that!

This is my favorite picture of me above.  This was during the "running with a 14# med ball" portion of the third WOD.  This was our worst showing, but by this point, I think we were all pretty tired.  We came in middle of the pack (20th or so).  If you think I'm bad at rowing, you should see me running with a 14# med ball!  If you think that is a look of pain on my face in the above picture... well, you would be right!

Me and my teammates pausing for a mid-WOD photo shot!  This was really so much fun- it was comfortable being at our home gym with ONLY CFNE athletes there.  I hope Ben decides to do this again, because it was really fun!

Aruba Trip - Part 4

The last installment of the Aruba adventures - aren't you excited?  Naturally, there was a lot more of this going on during out last full day in Aruba...

And then there was a little of this, below, going on.  Yep, absolutely nothing.  Just enjoying the water, and soaking in the sun.

In the evening, we went on a sunset cruise, back on the same catamaran that we went on when we went snorkeling.  It was a beautiful evening and sunset. Below, cargo ships and schooners in the distance.

The sunset was really pretty, but a few clouds were in the way, so we didn't see the very end of it.

All of the boats coming back into port at about the same time after all of the sunset cruises.  The lights were starting to come on around the island.  This was one of my favorite moments, even though it was the end of our trip.  It was just really beautiful.  We really loved Aruba- it was the perfect relaxing vacation for two very tired parents!

Aruba Trip - Part 3

Naturally after a night on the Kukoo Konuku, we needed a "do nothing day."  This is what we did.

Need I say more about the above picture?  And heck, for that matter, the picture below?

This is Todd lounging around. This is his happy place.

After a day of lounging around, we went out to the famous El Gaucho restaurant for the official celebratory dinner for Kern, Cooch, Dorothy and Todd's 40th birthday.

The official group photo must include everyone smiling, and then Kern, making some sort of goofball face!  It wouldn't be right otherwise!

Then we decided to go to Senor Frog's for some fun.  Somehow, Todd got roped into a contest, where he had to race against 2 other guys by doing the following:  take a shot of tequila, do 10 "real" push ups, spin around with your head on a bat 10 times, and then chug a beer.  The guy with the best time had :44 seconds, I believe.  Then Todd did it in about :35 seconds!  He was the big winner!  His push ups were legit too, while the other guy's weren't even close to "chest to deck."  Then the other guy complained that Todd had taken his shoes off, ha ha, as if that had anything to do with his awesomeness.  Below, Todd is scanning the crowd for his harem of lady fans from Philadelphia (who we had previously met on the Kukoo Konuku bus, but randomly ran into at Senor Frogs!  Hey, it's a small island!)

Why, yes it is Cooch.  Why, yes it is.

Aruba Trip - Part 2

The third day in Aruba found us up in the Palm Beach/Eagle Beach area.  Just a relaxing day, reading, sunning, playing in the water, and of course... eating and drinking.  Oh and maybe an occasional hand stand...

For dinner, we went to Cuba's Cookin' and they had some excellent Sangria, as well as Ceviche and Mojitos (the Mojito's were so good, we actually went back another night just for drinks!)  Below, the ladies tried in vain to imitate Carmen Miranda (she's behind us on the wall).

On Wednesday of the week, we went on a kayaking trip on the western part of the island, southeast of the airport (Oranjestad is just northwest of the airport).  Todd and I did a 2-man kayak, but we didn't get any pictures of the entire day, for obvious reason (camera + kayak = disaster waiting to happen).  SO no photos, but it was really fun on the kayak, and Todd and I "won" the race out to DePalm Island (we came in second on the way back... I blame the Aruba Arriba!)  DePalm Island has a water park, snorkeling, and food.  We had a good time there, especially on the water slides.  Thankfully, Cooch snapped this shot below.

After we kayaked back, we went out to dinner in anticipation of a night out on the Kukoo Konuku.  We randomly picked a place to eat, which was probably our first mistake.  The second mistake was when we stayed, even when the waiter said their credit card machine wasn't working and they were out of chicken.  (But thankfully, they had plenty of basil!)  The Kukoo Konuku is pretty much just a drunk party bus, and you go around to different bars and drink and do shots.  What could possibly go wrong???  Before dinner, below.

Next up... the Kukoo Konuku!  THE BUS! It's bright.  It's loud.  It's got flashing lights and bass pumping music blaring from it.  It's even got maracas.

The second stop found us with headdress on.

But then the guys felt the need to try them on... Kern looks possessed!

On the bus, there was more maraca and booty shaking.  I think the "out of control" sign painted on the inside of the bus behind Kern is pretty appropriate.

This picture below was right after Kern got busted for trying to make out with the glass windows behind him.

Kern is notorious for making the best faces ever in photographs.  People ask Kern and Todd if they were twin brothers ALL the time, and I can totally see in this pic why they would think that!

Stay tuned for the third installment of the Aruba trip, coming soon to a blog near you!

Aruba Trip - Part 1

OK, I get that I'm 4 months late on this one.  But seriously, who has time?  I promise to do better.  :-)  Famous last words!

Back in April - Todd and I went to Aruba, for a WHOLE WEEK without the kids (thanks mom and dad!).  We went with our friends, Alesandro (Cooch) and Karen, and Kern and Dorothy.  We stayed at the Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino in Oranjestad and had an absolute blast.  Given that I am writing this in August, rather than April, I have to say that so far, this year has sucked, and this was really the highlight of our year thus far.

The first day, we decided to hit the private island that the Marriott has - you have to take a boat to get to it. It's a barrier island that is probably a mix of being a natural and man made island.  They have rocky breakwaters that surround the lagoon areas on the island, and I'm fairly certain those are man made.  But the islands are fairly private and somewhat quiet (at least until Kern got there...)

Above is the boat ride over to the island (you can see Cooch and Dorothy).  That is our hotel in the background.

Above, is the scenery on the way to the island.  The water is so green... and part of me is amazed by it, but the Floridian in me thinks this kind of photo is old hat.

Dorothy and Kern heading out for a swim.  The water was really clear, and so pretty.  There were also two sides to the island- one is an "adults only" side which is where we went this day.  There were no kids around, and I think on the first day, this was a wise choice for Todd and I.  There were also a ton of flamingos, bright blue fish, iguanas and hermit crabs running around this island.  There's a bar and they serve food there too- which we definitely enjoyed.

Day 2 found us on a very large catamaran, doing a ton of snorkeling in 3 different locations, along with drinking a ton of Aruba Arriba. Oh boy. The picture above is Kern jumping off the side of the catamaran. This might be my favorite picture of all time. Totally care free. And drunk.

I don't know what was going on here, but I have one picture of us all looking to the right, and then one of us all looking to the left.  What?  Hello Aruba Arriba!  Out of a very large Gatorade cooler!

It wasn't the picture of Kern drinking MORE Aruba Arriba that I wanted to show you here... despite the fact that we love Kern... it was the super green/blue water that was behind him!  Really!?

This is what happens after you drink Aruba Arriba all day.  We went out for the most amazing dinner at Barefoot Aruba, just east-south-east of the airport. But of course, we had been drinking all day.  And the drinking just continued...

Dude.  What?

Here we are for the 5 seconds we spent being serious for the ENTIRE DAY.  This is right before Kern challenged the waiter to a footrace.  A footrace.  On the beach.  In the complete dark.  Kern made up the rules, then forgot them, then proceeded to lose the footrace to the waiter, and then told everyone he met that there would be a rematch (which there wasn't).  Funniest night EVER!

Boston Marathon and Daddy's 40th Birthday!

April 16th was the day of the Boston Marathon this year, on an unusually warm day (good for spectators, not so good for the runners!).  It just so happens that it was also Todd's 40th birthday!  So we went to Mel's house for the marathon to cheer on some of the fastest marathoners in the world.

We also got to cheer on several CFNE members as they ran the marathon too!

Of course, after the first 10 minutes, the kids were out of snacks and decided that getting dirty in Mel's freshly mulched lawn would be more fun.

Later that evening, we went out to the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate Todd's 40th birthday!  (The following week, we would go to Aruba, so please don't mind the lameness of just taking my husband to the Cheesecake Factory to celebrate such a momentous occasion!)

Natalie made this nice birthday card for daddy for his birthday!  Happy birthday Daddy!  We love you!
