Day 3! Let's do this!
We started out in the pool after breakfast on the balcony (Kona coffee and breakfast sammies, of course). Please do not drown your brother, Natalie.
And THEN... our friends Dorothy and Kern arrived from San Jose! They arrived so early that their room wasn't ready yet but they managed to get their bathing suits and join us at the beach.
We also discovered the ABC store. WHAAAAT. Natalie and I were able to buy some of Jungkook's (of BTS) favorite banana milk! And it was SO good!
And I'm pretty certain I have this potholder set that was a gift from the last time my brother was in Hawaii. The ABC Store literally sells everything!
After our adventures at the ABC Store, we went to Kern and Dot's room for some pre-dinner drinks. Which clearly we crushed.
Their room had a very different view than ours!
What's going on here, are we in a scene from Spiderman??
The best part of this photo is that Kern and Dorothy don't even know it's being taken!
We grabbed an Uber down to Shorefyre Grill and Beach Bar for an excellent meal!
Dorothy and Todd have been friends since they were about 5 years old!
My meal was SO GOOD. I had chicken thighs with mango salsa, greens and coconut jasmine rice! It was the best meal I had all week!
Since we were finishing dinner, we missed the sunset but we still got to enjoy the last remaining bits of light.
We walked down to the Banyan Tree on Kūhiō Beach. Apparently a lot of birds nest in this tree.
I'm not doing myself any favors by crouching down like I'm in a sorority picture from 1995. This banyan tree is ginormous!
It's a literal paradise.
For some reason, we don't know how to be normal. And Dorothy is over there trying to take a nice picture.
This is my absolute favorite picture from the trip. Grant and Kern look ridiculously funny but Todd's deadpan face behind them is THE funniest!!!
I think this is my favorite banyan tree.
Could this BE any more beautiful??
We decided to walk back to our hotel rather than take an Uber, so we were able to walk by the statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue. Duke is a Hawaiian LEGEND! He won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals and a bronze in swimming in the Olympics between 1912 and 1932 - yet he is also known as the father of international surfing! I mean, this guy LITERALLY did it all. In addition to these amazing accomplishments, he also "introduced surfing to the eastern seaboard of America, Europe and Australia. He became a hero when he saved 8 lives from a capsized launch at Corona del Mar, California in 1925, using his surfboard. A movie actor from 1925-1933, he was elected Sherriff of Honolulu for thirteen consecutive terms from 1934-1960. He has been recognized as Hawaii's Ambassador of Aloha since 1912." An impressive resume, indeed.
I wonder if Duke ever surfed in a tsunami...
I didn't get a great picture of it, but we passed by the Moana Surfrider Hotel on our way back to our hotel and it was BEAUTIFUL - and it was Waikiki's first hotel!
It was a long walk, so of course we had to stop for libations. We swung by the Maui Brewing Company (whaaat? Aren't you in Oahu??) for a quick drink. When I ran to the bathroom, I found Kern on my way back carrying several glasses of water. Um, did he get a waiter job here while I was in the restroom? No joke though, this is the BEST WATER I HAVE EVER TASTED. I am a weirdo when it comes to water - it all does NOT taste the same. But you could grab a glass of water from this special filtration system fountain and it was insanely good. The beer was good too, but not even CLOSE to being as good as the water!
Next up, Day 4!
